Susan G. Komen for the Cure is still supporting Planned Parenthood

I was totally excited to hear that Susan G. Komen for the Cure was cutting ties to Planned Parenthood. I posted this on our facebook wall and we got tons of “likes” and positive comments.
Komen also posted a new policy on human embryonic stem cell research. On it they highlight that they support, “research on … stem cells that … may result in improved understanding of or treatments for breast cancer, but are derived without creating a human embryo or destroying a human embryo.”
This is great stuff! The pro-life community should be proud of themselves for affecting change – boycotting Susan G. Komen for the Cure for the support of Planned Parenthood and human embryonic stem cell research. Boycotting and letter writing campaigns work and this is proof.
BUT our work is not done. Susan G. Komen is still supporting Planned Parenthood. According to their Nancy Brinker, the founder and CEO (on MSNBC), “We haven’t defunded Planned Parenthood. We still have three grants that we’ve committed to, at least through another year until the end of the grant cycle.“
And, according to this blog it looks like Susan G. Komen may be changing its tune:
We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities.
I understand that Susan G. Komen has legal obligations to continue current grants. But it sounds like they are continuing three grants, willing to extend those grants and maybe more while also changing it’s policy totally.
So in other words Susan G. Komen for the Cure is still supporting Planned Parenthood. It’s to a much lesser degree but it is still support.
I would ask that you continue to thank Susan G. Komen for their decision to drastically cut funding while also continuing to put pressure on them to discontinue the financial support they currently maintain.
Thank you. What do you think?
